Understanding what trauma truly is plays a critical role in our trauma recovery journey because it validates the impact of our past experiences and provides a framework for healing. Trauma isn't just about the event itself but about how our nervous system, thoughts, and emotions have been shaped by those experiences. When we fully grasp the ways trauma affects us—emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually—we can approach our recovery with greater compassion and clarity.
Without this understanding, we risk minimising our own experiences, which can lead to suppressing emotions, reinforcing shame, and prolonging our suffering. When we downplay our trauma, we might try to push through pain without addressing its roots, creating barriers to true healing. By acknowledging the depth of our trauma, we give ourselves permission to heal fully and foster genuine growth and transformation in our lives.
